Hi

In this newsletter I'll tell you exactly how to do a kick over squat, and why I genuinely believe the variation I teach is more effective, and vastly more interesting than numerous other “body weight” exercises.

First, let’s learn the exercise. The kick over squat variation I teach begins from the standing position. Sit down from where you are and throw your feet over your head until they touch the floor behind you. Now swing them back forward and, without using your hands, stand to a squat, knees bent so your thighs are parallel to the floor. Now, bend over and put your hands down by your feet, shoot your legs out behind you and do 1 push up. Bring your feet back to starting position and stand up. That’s one rep.

You can find this exercise on p. 26 of my book Martial-Fitness. Incidentally, I’ve renamed the book Shaolin Fitness Secrets because the emphasis is on using traditional Animal Style training for long life, good health, and skill development.

The reason I like this exercise so much is that 25 reps, especially when done in conjunction with other exercises, knocks you out. I know some books recommend squat variations that are done in such a way that you “build up” to 250 reps. That’s great, but frankly I don’t want to do 250 of ANYTHING! I tend to get bored at 25 or in some cases 50. After that it’s time to try something else – work a different muscle group, or work the same muscle group a different way. Plus, how much of my training time do I want to devote to doing just one thing?

Also, the more reps you do, the more your brain tends to run on autopilot. I believe it’s mentally healthier to keep your routine fresh by having a variety of activities that engage your mind. So give the kick over squat a try!

2nd item: I’m hosting my 15th Annual Training Camp here in Virgina this November 6th & 7th. Among subjects taught will be Traditional Kung Fu Entry, Trapping, and Control Drills, Hsing I Five Elements and their Applications, Kung Fu Strength Training, Yang Tai Chi, Kung Fu Short Staff, Pushing Hands, Sparring Tips, Tricks, and Set Ups, and of course, a Black Sash Demonstration, camping out, cooking over an open fire, and getting loads of fresh air, exercise, and all of that in one fun, relaxing (relatively) weekend.

It’s open to anyone with a safe, friendly attitude. If you’re interested, email me and I’ll send you the details.

Hope you can join us. Until next time, train like you mean it.
