Forms and Morning Yoga at White Birch
Date: Thurs, 19 January 2006
I got a lot of inquiries about the forms DVD I offered in the last newsletter. There were many questions, and some opinions about "kata." I think I need to clarify just exactly what I believe forms training is and isn't.
It took me a while to arrive at this opinion, so please give me a hearing.
Let's say you think forms training is a waste of time. Okay.
Do you shadowbox? If you do, good. You should. Now, do you put your shadow boxing into a set routine?
See where I'm headed with this? If it's a routine, it's a form.
On the other hand, are you a big fan of forms training?
Why? It won't teach you how to fight, and it's pretty much only a cardio workout where conditioning is concerned.
So are forms a waste of time or not?
I don't know. Is shadow boxing a waste of time? Are push ups a waste of time? Are kettlebells a waste of time?
A drill is a drill. It is what it is and it isn't what it isn't. Anyone who expects one kind of training to do everything is asking too much. That's why we mix our routines.
The bottom line - do what you enjoy. If you want cardio, great. Try jogging, but if you prefer swinging a broadsword 'till you're panting for air and your hair is pasted to your forehead, don't make any apologies. Just do it.
I could go on about forms training, but it's up to each of us to do the hard work, so I'll let you decide how to spend your valuable training hours.
One final item:
My apologies if you're not in the Arlington, Virginia area - but I want to send this Heads Up to all my subscribers who are.
White Birch Kung Fu & Tai Chi is offering free classes in Hatha Yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m to 10:15 a.m. during the month of January. After January, there will be a fee.
Please join us. I've been doing it for a few weeks now and I like it a lot. I do my kettlebell routine right after class and I feel great.
